Duplicates: remove extra copies

Find files you have more than one copy of, choose the copy to keep, and remove the rest.

  2. Choose what stays
  3. Remove the extra copies

Duplicates finds files that are exact copies of each other, byte for byte, even when their names are different. It looks in Downloads and Desktop, where the same download tends to pile up two or three times.

Duplicates: 4 extra copies found, grouped into sets such as a screen recording on both Downloads and Desktop, with the oldest copy of each marked Stays
Each set lists every copy. The one marked Stays is kept.

Where it looks

Duplicates checks Downloads and Desktop when you open it. To check somewhere else, such as Documents or an external drive, click Choose folder….

To keep the scan quick and the results useful, it skips:

  • hidden files
  • files smaller than 4 KB or larger than 4 GB
  • folders full of code and build output, such as node_modules and .git

Choose what stays

Each set shows the file's name, how many copies there are and their size. Under it, every copy is listed with where it is and when it was made.

  • The oldest copy stays by default, marked Stays.
  • To keep a different copy instead, click it.
  • The ticked copies are the ones that go. Untick one to keep it as well.
  • One copy of every file always stays. Crumb won't let you tick them all.

Each copy also has a Safe? button and a button to show it in Finder, so you can check before you remove anything.

Remove the extra copies

  1. Click Remove and the number of copies, at the top right.
  2. Crumb asks once more, naming how much space they take. Click Remove.

The extra copies are deleted for good, not moved to the Trash. Crumb shows how much space came back. Click Done to scan again, or Scan again at any time.

Anyone can look for duplicates. Removing them is part of Crumb Pro.
