To remove only Word, quit it and move Microsoft Word from Applications to Trash. Do not follow the shared-folder deletion steps from a full Office removal guide when your goal is to keep Excel, Outlook, or other Microsoft apps working.
The distinction matters because the application bundle is only one part of the Office installation. Shared storage can contain useful data for apps you intend to retain.
Define what you are removing
For a simple single-app uninstall, the target is Microsoft Word.app. Your documents, templates, add-ins, account, and subscription are separate concerns. Before removing the app, save your documents and make a backup of custom work that would be difficult to recreate.
If the Mac belongs to your employer or school, check whether Word is managed. An automatically restored application may indicate an organization’s deployment policy rather than a failed Finder operation.
Remove the application first
- Save documents and quit Word. If it is stuck, resolve unsaved work before forcing it to quit.
- Open Finder’s Applications folder.
- Select Microsoft Word specifically and move it to Trash.
- Open Excel and Outlook to verify the applications you are keeping still work.
- Remove Word’s Dock shortcut if you no longer need it.
Microsoft’s Office uninstall guide includes removing applications and then performing a broader Library cleanup. That full cleanup is a different scope. Microsoft explicitly warns that removing certain Group Containers also removes Outlook data.
Leave shared folders alone for a single-app removal
A folder with Office in its name is not automatically a Word-only leftover. If you cannot establish whether a folder is shared, retain it. The storage cost of keeping a small preference file is usually less consequential than disrupting a mail archive or another working app.
Also avoid removing Microsoft AutoUpdate simply because Word is gone. Consider the Microsoft applications that remain. Our AutoUpdate guide treats that decision separately.
Documents and licensing need their own checks
Before uninstalling, open a representative document in the application you plan to use next. Check formatting, tracked changes, and any features important to your work. Having a file backup is valuable, but so is knowing how you will read and edit it afterward.
Removing an app is not a subscription cancellation. Microsoft’s activation guidance also distinguishes signing out from uninstalling and canceling a subscription. Manage billing through the account or store responsible for the purchase if that is your goal.
If Word returns or the space barely changes
Check a management profile or organizational installer if the application reappears. If space barely changes, inspect the app’s actual size before assuming hidden leftovers are the problem. Large local mail data or downloaded documents may belong to applications you chose to keep.
For removing the entire suite, use the complete Office removal guide and back up local data first. For removing one app, stop once that app is gone and the retained workflow has been verified.
